How do you explain to a cat that technically static electricity discharge is his fault, not yours?

In my apartment, it is both of our fault, but petting my cat is a rather "electric" experience. Last year, he shocked me with his "static superpowers" when he turned off an expensive electronic device....by sniffing it.
(Rajah hates static electricity at least as much as I do!!)
